Shopify CRO Audit Checklist (2026): 40 Points to Check
The 40-point checklist I use to audit Shopify stores, from speed and navigation to product pages, checkout, trust and tracking.

Before you spend more on ads, it is worth checking whether your store is ready to convert the traffic you already have. A conversion rate optimization (CRO) audit is a structured review of every step between a visitor landing on your store and completing a purchase.
This is the checklist I use when I audit a Shopify store. Work through it on your phone first, because that is where most of your shoppers are.
How to use this checklist
- Go through each section on a real mobile phone, then on desktop.
- Mark each point as OK, Needs work or Broken.
- Fix anything “Broken” first, then the “Needs work” items on your highest-traffic pages.
- Measure your conversion rate, add-to-cart rate and average order value before and after.
1. Speed and technical basics
- Your homepage, top collection and best-selling product page load quickly on mobile (test them in Google PageSpeed Insights).
- Product images are compressed and correctly sized, not multi-megabyte uploads.
- Apps you no longer use have been removed, including leftover code in the theme.
- Nothing jumps around as the page loads (layout shift).
- There are no broken links, missing images or 404 pages in your main menu and footer.
For the full speed process, see my Shopify speed optimization guide.
2. Homepage and navigation
- Within five seconds, a new visitor understands what you sell and who it is for.
- The main menu has a small number of clear, customer-friendly categories.
- Search works, is easy to find on mobile, and returns sensible results.
- Collection pages have filters and sorting that match how customers choose (size, color, price, use).
- Your best-sellers or most popular collections are one tap from the homepage.
3. Product pages
- The product title and price are visible without scrolling on mobile.
- The Add to Cart button is visible above the fold, or a sticky add-to-cart bar is used.
- There are enough photos: multiple angles, in-use, scale, and every variant.
- The description leads with benefits, then lists specs and details.
- Size guides, fit notes or “which one is right for me” guidance are easy to find.
- Variant selectors are clear, and out-of-stock variants are obvious.
- Shipping cost and estimated delivery are shown on the page.
- The return policy is summarized near the buy button.
- Reviews and a star rating are shown, ideally with customer photos.
- Frequently asked questions are answered on the page, not only in a separate FAQ.
Product pages are usually where the biggest wins are. It is also the focus of my product page optimization service.
4. Cart
- The cart clearly shows products, quantities, variants and the total.
- A free-shipping threshold or shipping estimate is shown in the cart.
- Express payment buttons (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal) appear in the cart.
- There is at most one relevant upsell, not a wall of offers.
- The checkout button is the most visible element in the cart.
5. Checkout
- Guest checkout is allowed.
- The checkout shows your logo and brand colors.
- Discount codes apply without errors.
- All shipping options show a cost and delivery estimate.
- A test order on a real phone goes through smoothly from start to finish.

6. Trust and credibility
- Contact details are easy to find (email, and a phone number or live chat if you offer them).
- Shipping, return and privacy policies are linked in the footer and written in plain language.
- Your About page shows the real people or story behind the brand.
- Reviews, press mentions or trust badges are real and relevant, not generic.
- The design looks consistent and finished on every page you link to.
7. Tracking and follow-up
- Shopify analytics (and Google Analytics, if you use it) records purchases correctly.
- You can see the funnel: sessions, add to cart, reached checkout, and completed orders.
- Your ad platforms receive purchase events, so they optimize for buyers rather than clicks.
- Abandoned checkout emails are turned on and written in your brand voice.
- A post-purchase email asks for a review and invites repeat purchases.
What to fix first
A 40-point list can feel overwhelming. Prioritize like this:
- Broken things. Checkout errors, broken pages and missing buttons lose sales every day.
- Your highest-traffic pages. A small improvement on your best-selling product page is worth more than a big change on a page nobody visits.
- The biggest funnel drop. If most shoppers leave at the product page, start there. If they leave at checkout, start there.
What a CRO audit can achieve
A checklist shows you where the problems are. The results come from fixing them carefully and measuring the impact. A few examples from my own projects, measured in the 90 days after launch:
- BakedByKanyeen (luxury cakes): conversion rate up 29% and mobile speed up 37% after a redesign focused on product pages and the path to order (case study).
- My Love For Paws (pet lifestyle): conversion rate up 11%, average order value up 8% and bounce rate down 19% (case study).
- YG MODS (luxury watches): conversion rate up 10% and mobile speed up 41% (case study).
Frequently asked questions
What is a Shopify CRO audit?
It is a structured review of your store’s speed, navigation, product pages, cart, checkout, trust signals and tracking, aimed at finding what stops visitors from buying.
How often should I audit my Shopify store?
Do a full audit at least once or twice a year, and a quick check after any theme change, redesign or major app installation.
Can I do a CRO audit myself?
Yes. This checklist covers the main points. An outside audit helps because it is hard to see your own store the way a first-time visitor does.
How long does a CRO audit take?
A self-audit with this checklist can take an afternoon. A professional audit usually includes analytics review, recorded walkthroughs and a prioritized list of fixes.
