Shopify CRO Expert: How to Hire the Right One (2026)
How to choose a Shopify CRO expert: what they do, 7 checks before hiring, red flags and questions to ask. Written for stores selling in the US and Europe.

Quick answer: A Shopify CRO expert is a specialist who finds why your store’s visitors don’t buy and fixes it with research, testing and development. Hire one who shows real case studies, works from your data (not templates), can implement changes themselves, and understands your market, whether that is the US, the UK or the EU.
What does a Shopify CRO expert actually do?
A Shopify conversion rate optimization (CRO) expert improves the share of your visitors who become customers. The work usually has four parts:
- Research: reading your analytics, heatmaps, session recordings and customer feedback to find where shoppers drop off.
- Hypotheses: turning those findings into specific changes, ranked by expected impact and effort.
- Implementation: editing theme code, product pages, the cart and checkout.
- Testing and measurement: running A/B tests or before-and-after checks and reporting the results honestly.
If you want the full process, read my Shopify conversion rate optimization guide. This post is about choosing who does the work.
When should you hire a CRO expert?
Hire one when you already have steady traffic but sales are flat. A few common signs:
- You get visits but few orders. Start with why your Shopify store gets traffic but no sales.
- Your ad spend keeps rising while return on ad spend falls.
- Mobile conversion is far below desktop.
- Many shoppers add to cart and leave. See cart abandonment fixes.
If you have almost no traffic, fix traffic and positioning first. Testing needs enough visitors to give a trustworthy result.
7 things to check before you hire
- Proof of results. Ask for case studies with the store name, the change made and the measured result. You can see mine on my case studies page.
- A process, not a template. A good expert starts with an audit of your store. Ask what the audit covers. Mine is described on the CRO audit page.
- Hands-on development skill. Many “consultants” only send slide decks. Ask who will build the changes.
- Honest testing. They should explain sample size, test duration and what they do when a test is inconclusive.
- Market knowledge. US shoppers expect fast shipping promises and wallets such as Shop Pay and Apple Pay. European shoppers expect local payment methods (iDEAL, Bancontact, SEPA, Klarna), clear VAT-inclusive prices and a visible cookie choice.
- Clear scope and pricing. Fixed audit fee, project fee or monthly retainer are all normal. Be wary of anyone who guarantees a specific lift.
- Communication. You should get plain reports on what changed, what moved and what happens next.
Red flags
- A guaranteed conversion rate increase.
- No questions about your customers, margins or traffic sources.
- Recommendations that are only “change the button colour”.
- Refusal to show past work.
- Advice that ignores GDPR consent, accessibility or local tax display for European customers.
What a good engagement looks like
| Stage | What you receive |
|---|---|
| Audit | Ranked list of issues across speed, product pages, cart, checkout, trust and tracking |
| Quick wins | Fixes shipped in the first weeks (forms, mobile layout, speed, trust elements) |
| Testing | Hypothesis-driven tests on your highest-traffic pages |
| Reporting | Plain-language summary of results and next steps |
CRO expert vs agency vs freelancer
A freelance expert is usually faster to start and works directly with you. An agency offers more people and can cover design, development and paid media together. An in-house hire makes sense once you have enough volume to keep them busy. Choose the one whose evidence fits your store’s size and budget.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a Shopify CRO expert cost?
Prices vary widely with scope and experience. Most experts charge a one-off audit fee, a fixed project fee or a monthly retainer. Ask for a written scope so you can compare offers on the same basis.
How long until a CRO expert shows results?
Quick fixes such as form, speed and mobile layout issues can show an effect within weeks. Test-driven gains build over several months, because each test needs enough traffic to reach a reliable result.
Do I need a CRO expert or a Shopify developer?
If you know what to change, a developer can build it. If you do not know why visitors leave, you need CRO research first. The best option is one person who does both.
Can a CRO expert work with stores selling in both the US and Europe?
Yes, but they should adapt for each market: currency and tax display, payment methods, shipping messaging, language and consent banners.
What should a Shopify CRO audit include?
Speed, mobile experience, navigation, product pages, cart, checkout, trust signals and analytics setup. See my 40-point Shopify CRO audit checklist.
