What is a website speed test?
A website speed test measures how fast your page loads and how early visitors can use it. The tool uses Google Lighthouse and PageSpeed Insights. The result shows where time is lost, for example through large images, blocking JavaScript or a slow server. A fast website improves user experience, lowers bounce rate and is an advantage for search engine optimisation (SEO).
Core Web Vitals and benchmarks at a glance
| Metric | What it measures | Good value |
|---|---|---|
| LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) | When the largest visible content has loaded | under 2.5 s |
| INP (Interaction to Next Paint) | How quickly the page responds to input | under 200 ms |
| CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) | How stable the layout stays while loading | under 0.1 |
| FCP (First Contentful Paint) | When the first content appears | under 1.8 s |
| TBT (Total Blocking Time) | How long the page is blocked | under 200 ms |
| TTFB (server response time) | How quickly the server responds | under 0.8 s |
WHY SPEED MATTERS
Faster pages affect everything, from revenue to effort
More visitors become customers
Nobody likes waiting. A fast page lets people browse, buy and enquire without delay.
Found better on Google
Load time and Core Web Vitals are part of page experience. The faster your page, the better your chance of higher rankings.
Less cost and effort
A high-performing page saves ad budget and developer time that you can invest in growth.
How to make your website faster
Optimise images
Compress images, use modern formats like WebP or AVIF and lazy-load images below the fold.
Enable caching
Page and browser caching make sure returning visitors get content instantly.
Choose fast hosting
A performant server and a CDN lower server response time (TTFB), especially for visitors far from your server.
Reduce JavaScript
Remove unnecessary plugins and tracking scripts, defer scripts and shrink code through minification.
Improve fonts
Host fonts locally, use fewer weights and enable font-display: swap so text is visible immediately.
Keep layout stable
Give images and ad slots fixed dimensions so nothing jumps and the CLS value stays low.
Frequently asked questions about the website speed test
What is a website speed test?
A website speed test measures how fast a page builds up and becomes usable. It checks load time, Core Web Vitals and other metrics and shows which files and scripts slow your page down.
How fast should a website load?
The goal is for the largest visible content (LCP) to appear in under 2.5 seconds. A page with a performance score of 90 or higher counts as fast; scores below 50 count as too slow.
What are the Core Web Vitals?
The Core Web Vitals are three Google metrics for user experience: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP, loading speed), Interaction to Next Paint (INP, responsiveness) and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS, visual stability).
Does load time affect my Google ranking?
Yes. Page experience with the Core Web Vitals is a ranking signal. A fast page gets fully loaded more often, has fewer bounces and usually converts better.
Why do results differ with each test?
Server load, network and third-party scripts vary. Test several times and compare mobile and desktop to get a reliable picture.
Why is the mobile score worse than the desktop score?
The mobile test simulates an average smartphone on a slower connection. Because Google indexes mobile first, the mobile score is the more important one.
How can I make my website faster?
The biggest levers are compressed images in WebP format, caching, a fast server, fewer and smaller JavaScript files, optimised fonts and a CDN.
How much does the website speed test cost?
Nothing. The test is free and needs no signup.
